Getting to grips with new moves and abilities can take a while in this game, so it's good to work with what you know. ![]() When you unlock a new character for the first time, it's good to take them for a test run and swap them into your existing build instead of making an entirely new comp at first. This is also how you unlock additional abilities. Your heroes all have individual backstories, which you will be able to unlock and learn more about as you progress through the game and visit Shrines. As you progress, you'll want to keep an eye on which paths you have available and which ones line up with your desired build. When you're just starting out, hero paths aren't overly important and it's good to get a few extra candles under your belt by using the Wanderer path. They're all interesting and fun to play with, but some paths are definitely better than others. As you upgrade heroes at the Altar of Hope, you'll be able to choose new paths when building up your team. Each hero starts off with the Wanderer path at first, which rewards you with extra candles from every run. Paths are essentially Darkest Dungeon 2's answer to classes. ![]() For a small fee, you can get rid of a Quirk. If you get a Quirk that really interferes with your luck in battle, try to find a Field Hospital. The other tabs on these introduction screens will give you an overview of the character's skills, their randomly assigned personality traits known as Quirks, their hero paths, and their story so far. The initial character introduction screens will give you a character summary and allow you to build your party at the bottom of the screen. You'll need to place these characters in the right slots when building your team at the Crossroads. Dismas has high HP, critical strike chance, and Riposte abilities, but doesn't have many abilities that can help his team or heal himself. ![]() He starts off with an ability called Duelist's Advance which means he's best suited to the back ranks at first. Dismas is a versatile, hard-hitting character that can perform well in any rank. Audrey's damage can be somewhat inconsistent and she has low HP, but she makes up for it with strong mobility and additional DOT abilities. She has a high critical strike chance and Stealth abilities, and can use Blight abilities and self heals, too. ![]() Audrey is a self-reliant character that can work well in any rank, but is best suited to the middle ranks when you start off playing. Paracelsus is almost entirely reliant on DOT (damage over time) instead of pure strikes and has quite low HP, but is flexible and can be a great support character. She works best in the back ranks of the party. Paracelsus is a hybrid character that has great ranged damage and healing abilities. Barristan isn't very fast but he has high HP, self-healing abilities, and decently high damage. He has Guard and Riposte abilities (think of these as parries or counters) and can also support other characters, too. Barristan is a heavy-hitting and sturdy hero that performs best in the front ranks. You'll be able to unlock more heroes as you progress (and strengthen them too) but your initial team will be: One of the most important things to think about when you're playing through the game for the first time is the heroes that you have at your disposal.
